Impasto Painting with Acrylic - New Works and News

On July 15 and 16th I attended the UPFRONT Festival in Whitehorse on the Wharf on the banks of the Yukon River.  Arts Underground sponsored this wonderful event and for 2 days I was one of their demonstrating artists.   I decided on Impasto painting for the demos as I find this to be a very spontaneous way of painting and I do not look at any reference material when I do it. There is a lot of interaction with the public when I am painting so this works well for me.

There is some preparation the day before. The canvas is gessoed with some colour and shapes drawn in with paynes grey. Then I use impasto gel to build up the texture before I start the main body of work.  The gel needs 24 hours to dry and is placed in the areas where I want extra texture ( like in the leaves and trunks of the aspens/birches and the petals of the fireweed. ) I had so much fun during the 2 days that I decided to do a little more impasto work in the next few weeks!
